The Mark Knopfler song challenging Beyoncé for number one
Beyoncé is currently being challenged for number one by an unlikely supergroup. Mark Knopfler recently assembled an ensemble containing everyone from Nile Rodgers and Joan Jett to Ringo Starr and Sting, whose collective single is currently climbing the charts.
Covering ‘Going Home,’ Mark Knopfler’s charity single is leading the midweek charts by less than 1000 units, meaning it is still hard to predict who will take the number one spot at the end of the week. All of the proceeds from Knopfler’s song will go towards Teenage Cancer Trust UK and Teen Cancer America. The track is doing well and getting more support as the week progresses.
Knopfler’s biggest rival also in the running for the top spot is Beyoncé with her catchy and upbeat country debut, ‘TEXAS HOLD ‘EM,’ a track that saw that the singer have her first UK no.1 in 14 years and also marked the first time a Black woman reached the top of the country charts.
Also climbing the ranks in the charts at the moment is BTS member V (Kim Tae-Hyung), who is looking to get his first solo UK Top 10 single. His song, ‘FRI(END)S,’ currently sits at number seven in the charts and is well-received by the band’s devoted fanbase.
Should ‘Going Home’ reach number one, it will be the latest in a long line of charity songs that have sold incredibly well. Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ is still viewed as a classic by many and managed to attain the Christmas Number One top spot with relative ease. Equally, Wet Wet Wet’s ‘With a Little Help from My Friends,’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Earth Song,’ are other popular charity singles that topped the charts.
With such a small gap separating Mark Knopfler and Beyoncé in their race to number one and so many other artists who could potentially snatch a last-minute burst of listeners, it’s difficult to predict who will finish the week on top.
