What was the longest concert in music history?
Most concerts only last for a few hours. Doors open around 7pm, and a support band or two will play a half-hour set, warming audiences up for the main event. Headliners then tend to play for around an hour to an hour-and-a-half, though some artists have garnered reputations for extending their live sets over several hours. A short encore later and the gig is over, leaving fans longing for more as they find their way home from the venue.
This is the average running order for a concert, but there are certain genres and artists who deviate from it. Hardcore bands often play much shorter sets than their counterparts in other genres due to the intensity and speed of the music. Bands who are just starting out may only have a limited amount of material to play for audiences. And The White Stripes even played a one-note show where they treated audiences to just seconds of playing.
On the contrary, some groups and singers drag out their performances for as long as possible. Bruce Springsteen, for example, is widely known for his thrilling, lengthy live sets which can run up to three hours long. Despite the length, audiences still flock to see him year after year. The same can be said for popstar Taylor Swift, whose ongoing ‘Eras’ tour lasts three and a half hours, allowing her to run through each of her “eras” or albums, in turn.
Although Swift and Springsteen have become known for their endurance-testing performances, neither performer even comes close to obtaining the record for the longest concert ever. Three hours almost seems short compared to the real record-breaking numbers, which are in the hundreds.
So, what was the world’s longest concert?
The world’s longest concert took place in Kerala, India around 15 years ago and was performed by Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan. The gig took place at the Rhythm Therapy Hall at Nandavanam Hospital, Ottapalam, and lasted for 21 days from July 5th until July 26th, 2009. This performance also won Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan the world record for the longest marathon of hand drumming.
Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan performed on a hand drum for just over 500 hours – 501, to be exact – a performance that not even Springsteen could rival. While Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan may hold the title for the longest concert by a solo artist, there is also a world record for the longest concert held by multiple artists.
This record was most recently broken in 2017 when the Epidemic Music Group got a community of musicians together to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada and raise money for a number of charities. This concert involved performances from over 1000 musicians across 18 days at the Earl of Whitchurch in Ontario, Canada.
The gig began on March 17th, 2017, and concluded on April 5th, 2017. In total, it lasted for 437 hours, 54 minutes and 40 seconds, making it just slightly shorter than Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan’s performance. Still, it beat the record for the longest concert by multiple artists as well as the longest live-streamed concert.
On the other end of the spectrum, the record for the shortest concert of all time goes to London-born rockers The Who, who called off a 2007 show in Florida after just 13 seconds of performing. Fans weren’t left disappointed for too long, as the show was quickly rescheduled, but it would never rival Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan’s numbers.
