The Last Dinner Party cancel five shows due to burnout

The Last Dinner Party has cancelled five shows on their European tour to protect the band’s physical, emotional, and mental health. Following some cancelled shows on the UK leg of their tour, the band has now announced that part of their European leg will no longer be going ahead but confirmed that most of the concerts will still happen.

Despite cancelling five shows, The Last Dinner Party do still plan on playing their European tour but are just concluding the jaunt early. They are set to play Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Utrecht, Lyon, Munich, Berlin, and Gdansk before finishing up in Prague on November 10th.

2024 has been an incredible year for The Last Dinner Party. It’s hard to think of another act this decade, let alone just this year, that has had the kind of monumental rise that they have. Following the release of their debut single ‘Nothing Matters’ in 2023, their cultish fame boomed to global status, positioning them as the world’s ones to watch and swiftly scaling up their fan base and, therefore, their audience size.

After releasing their debut album Prelude To Ecstacy earlier this year, the band recently embarked on a tour celebrating the record. For a relatively new act, the venue sizes are already considerable, as the group recently sold out three nights at the 5,300-capacity Eventim Apollo in London.

However, as the music world sees time and time again, a rise as sharp as theirs is often exhausting and unsustainable as the artists attempt to keep up with the mounting pressure and expectations. As The Last Dinner Party cancels their remaining tour dates, bringing their album release shows to an early end, they cited needing to prioritise their well-being as the reason.

A statement from the band reads: “As we came to the end of the UK/Ireland tour, we put some time aside to discuss how to approach the upcoming European tour. The burnout we’re experiencing — emotionally, mentally, and physically — is something we’re taking very seriously.”

They continued: “After much consideration, we have come to the difficult decision to finish the tour with the last show in Prague. This means that we are sadly cancelling our November headline shows in Vienna, Zurich, Parma, Luxembourg and Tilburg. We wanted to give fans with tickets to these particular dates as much advance notice as possible to adjust their plans. We sincerely apologise to our fans who were looking forward to seeing us, and we are truly saddened to not be seeing you this time.”

After explaining that the tickets will be refunded, the band further explained their decision. “This year has been incredible for us but undeniably exhausting and we have found that we need to take responsibility over the amount of shows that we can do. Pushing ourselves past breaking point is not a fair or wise decision for anyone,” they said, adding, “We hope that you can understand that our reason for cancelling these shows is to protect our well-being and give the very best performances you all deserve.”

The group also discussed changing how they work moving forward to ensure that their future schedules are more manageable and proactive regarding the band’s health and well-being.

“Moving forward and armed with the knowledge of our limits, we are working with our team to make sure we only book tours that we are capable of fulfilling at the highest potential. We never want to find ourselves in this situation again,” they said.

In a recent piece about the impact quick rising stars seem to feel, Far Out highlighted how The Last Dinner Party never expected this scale of fame. “We’re just going to be the next Fat White Family, and we’re happy with that level,” singer Abigail Morris remembered thinking while discussing the trajectory of The Last Dinner Party during an interview with BBC Radio 6, recalling their beginning in London’s small venues. Now a long way from that kind of niche, cultish fame as they stand as one of the most hyped new acts in the world, the band are making a statement about the need to protect new artists’ health amidst the chaos of new stardom.
