The Kinks reveal they are hoping to release new music
The Kinks have revealed they have a stock of material, which they hope to release in the future. However, no timeline has been given at this stage.
Frontman Ray Davies was talking ahead of the pending release of the second chapter in their anthology series The Journey – Part 2. The new compilation record is set to arrive on November 17th through BMG, with the physical format also boasting track-by-track notes written by the Davies brothers and Mick Avory.
While no new music features on The Journey – Part 2, Davies provided positive news about his tumultuous relationship with Avory. In a new interview with NME, he stated they were previously “always arguing,” but the singer has claimed the animosity has “mellowed down”, which opens the door for The Kinks to get the band back together.
In 2018, Davies claimed The Kinks were discussing plans to get back together, and he was making new music for the group. Explaining why the songs were never released, the frontman admitted: “Well, it got shelved because of… other issues. But there’s still material there. When I get time.”
Elaborating on these songs, which he claims there are “about 20”, Davies described them as “home demos” that he’d made over the last three decades with the help of the other two surviving members of the band.
He added: “There are about two or three songs I want to finish, and when they’re finished, I’ll put the whole thing together.”
Unfortunately, Davies said a full reunion remained “in the lap of the gods” and it would need to be for “a show that gives us the credit we deserve”. His brother Dave is another issue, with Ray adding: “You’ve gotta be careful because he’ll run off in one direction and I’ll [run] in mine… He’s like that. He stays in control.”
The frontman continued: “We’re just different animals. We found ourselves at a very young age being in each other’s faces. And we had to work with it somehow.”
