‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ draws huge opening weekend at box office

Marvel’s latest offering, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, enjoyed an impressive opening weekend, earning $118 million at the US box office and $218 million globally.

The blockbuster, starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the heroic quartet, has so far exceeded expectations in terms of its box office success, with estimated figures prior to its release slating profits of around $100 million.

This will undoubtedly come as welcome news for Marvel, whose titles have taken a major commercial hammering in recent times. Prior to The Fantastic Four, its most recent release, Thunderbolts*, only amassed $382 million in total throughout its theatrical run, making it one of the production house’s lowest-grossing films in history.

With the renewed positivity surrounding The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it becomes the fourth highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie in America for the year so far, coming in behind A Minecraft Movie, Lilo and Stitch, and its superhero competitor, Superman.

However, with the two most recent efforts from rival studios Marvel and DC both having performed well at the box office, this will allay fears of “superhero fatigue” among audiences, which Superman director James Gunn had already previously dismissed.

For the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the news will also come as a significant morale boost, after Pascal recently admitted that he was most anxious about joining the franchise. He told the Associated Press that, due to the love audiences have for the characters, “I think maybe my nerves were bigger than they usually are.”

The release of the film comes at a peak time in Pascal’s career, as he is also set to star in two other major movies, Eddington and Materialists, both of which will hit cinemas in the coming weeks.
