The legendary post-punk singer for The Fall, Mark E. Smith, has passed away at the age of 60.
The singer died at his home this morning, it has been confirmed.
Smith, the snarling frontman for Manchester post-punk band The Fall, has been a marauding presence on the music scene for over 40 years, a time in which Smith demonstrated his uncompromising nature by hiring and firing over 60 band members as well as being an integral part of 30 albums. The Fall released their 32nd studio album last year.
The band’s manager Pamela Vander released a statement, it read: “It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith. He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”
BBC’s Lauren Laverne said he was “untouchably cool” while The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess said he was “a true uncompromising musical maverick”.
We’ll just say we’ll miss him. Badly.
