The Cure tease new album ‘Songs of a Lost World’ through WhatsApp channel

After 16 long years, The Cure appear to be officially gearing up for their much-anticipated return, offering fans exciting hints along the way. Since rumours of a new project began circulating, the band has been dropping subtle clues online and in select places, keeping fans speculating and eager for what’s to come.

Word of a new album officially began when the group recently changed their profile pictures on social media and updated the official band logo, leading many to believe they were gearing up to release new material. They then sent a series of postcards to selected fans with the words Songs of a Lost World etched across them and the date November 1st, 2024, in Roman numerals.

Now, they have launched a new website and a WhatsApp channel ahead of the new release. Upon entering the website, fans must enter the Roman numerals on the postcards to reveal a new promotional artwork alongside an invitation to join the community WhatsApp group.

Additionally, as soon as fans join the WhatsApp group, they are immediately sent lyrics from one of the band’s new songs, ‘Alone’, which reads, “This is the end of every song that we sing… Where did it go?”

Songs of a Lost World will mark The Cure’s first record since 2008’s 4:13 Dream, but the long hiatus isn’t the only aspect of their storied career they seem to be tapping into to rouse excitement for the new project. They also placed a Songs of a Lost World poster up at The Railway Inn in Crawley, where they performed their very first gig.

What do we know so far about The Cure’s Songs of a Lost World?

Aside from the various promotional materials, the band have also been dropping clues along the way about what the album might sound like and how many tracks will be included.

At the Ivor Novello Awards in 2022, Smith said to NME: “Essentially it’s a 12 track album. It’s there, it’s kind of half-mixed and half-finished. It’s a weird thing. It’s kind of evolved over the last two years. It hasn’t always been a good thing to have been left alone with it. You pick at it, like picking at seams, and everything falls apart.”

Smith also promised the album will be “worth the wait” and “the best thing we’ve ever done.” He also explained that the delay in releasing it is due to it being “difficult to sing,” though it’s unsure whether he means the vocalisations are physically challenging or the subject matter is tough to face head-on. Knowing Smith, however, it’s likely a heavy dose of both.

During the band’s recent tour, they also gave fans a glimpse into some of the new tracks, which they have taken their time to perfect and make the long wait worthwhile. Two new live tracks, ‘And Nothing Is Forever’ and ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’, are set to be released on October 1st as part of a new compilation album titled The Cure – Novembre: Live in France 2022.

Although the band has yet to confirm November 1st as the official release date for Songs of a Lost World, all signs point to something promising, suggesting that the long-awaited release could be just around the corner.
