The Cure’s Robert Smith announces “companion” album to ‘Songs of a Lost World’

The Cure frontman Robert Smith has shared updates on a “companion” album to their latest release, Songs of a Lost World, and a potential third album that will likely have a completely new sound.

The band released Songs of a Lost World back in November, marking their latest record since 2008’s 4:13. Smith first teased details of the new album last year, claiming it to be their best yet, though a significant challenge to make it sound exactly how he envisioned.

Speaking about the new material during a recent interview, the musician shared details about other material they had been working on since 4:13. This material could be a “companion” piece to the latest record—alongside other songs that form the basis of a completely new record. However, a release date has not been revealed.

He also provided an update on which stages each project is in, saying the latter is complete and that the other is a follow-up to their latest record. “There is another album which is pretty much ready to go,” he told Absolute Radio. “It’s sort of its companion piece,” he said, adding that there is also new material for another “third” album.

“There’s a third one which is completely different,” he continued, adding, “It’s really kind of random stuff, like late-night studio stuff. But some of it is really good actually, it’s just very very different. This Songs Of A Lost World album is a really emotional piece of work and the companion piece, it’s not quite as dark but it explores other subjects a little bit more.”

Revealing the nature of the third record, Smith described it as “very odd” and said his focus has been on Songs of a Lost World. He is also still enjoying the positive reaction to their new material, and the band also recently announced an accompanying live album, so he is very much still celebrating the reaction.

The Cure’s new live version of Songs of a Lost World

The live album, titled Songs of a Live World: Troxy London MMXXIV, was recorded at Troxy on November 1st in celebration of the album’s launch. At the special event, the band performed the album in full, alongside 23 other songs from their discography.

The upcoming project will be released on December 13th on physical and digital formats, with fans also able to enjoy a recorded version streaming on YouTube. All of the profits from the sales will go to charity War Child, which supports children impacted by conflict across the world.

Alongside all eight tracks on the new album, the live record also captures the songs they performed from their historic catalogue, including ‘Friday, I’m In Love’, ‘Disintegration’, ‘Lovesong’, ‘Just Like Heaven’, ‘A Forest’, ‘Close To Me’, and more.
