‘The Cosby Show’ star Malcolm-Jamal Warner dead at 54 after drowning

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who starred in all eight seasons of The Cosby Show, has died aged 54 after reportedly drowning on a family holiday.

According to People, Warner died in tragic circumstances while holidaying with his family in Costa Rica. However, there is yet to be an official statement released on behalf of the Warner family. He is survived by a wife and daughter, whose identities he chose to keep out of the public eye.

Warner starred as Heathcliff Huxtable, the only son of Bill Cosby’s character, in eight series of the hit show from 1984 to 1992.

The legacy of The Cosby Show dramatically changed when Cosby was convicted of sexual assault in 2018 after more than 50 women came forward with accusations of sexual assault or rape. The charge was later overturned in 2021, and Cosby was released from prison, but he has since faced more sexual assault allegations, which he denies.

Although Warner admitted The Cosby Show is tainted for some due to the allegations against Cosby, he told People in 2023 that he remains proud of the sitcom, sharing, “Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I’m still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture.”

Other notable roles in his career included Major Crimes, Suits, The Resident, The People vs OJ Simpson, Sons of Anarchy, Malcolm and Eddie and Reed Between The Lines.

Last year, he spread his wings into podcasting, launching Not All Hood with co-hosts Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley, which focused on breaking the stigma of discussing mental health within the Black community.

His last credit was as Amir Casey in four episodes of 9-1-1 in 2024.
