Sandra Bullock on why Melissa McCarthy is a comedy genius: “You just know right away”
While some dramatic actors are undeniably talented, comedic performance is a different kettle of fish. As good as Daniel Day-Lewis or Leonardo DiCaprio might be at their craft, they couldn’t do what Ayo Edebiri or Rachel Sennott do—both of whom are ushering in a new era in Hollywood with old-school comedy instincts and a refreshing sense of humour that’s shaken up a rigid industry. While comedians like Robin Williams and Jim Carrey have successfully crossed into drama and proven their range, few dramatic actors can say the same. Their deep commitment to transformation rarely bends toward more light-hearted roles.
But this is a skill that Sandra Bullock is in possession of, with the actor starring in everything from space dramas like Gravity to romantic comedies like While You Were Sleeping and The Proposal. Over the years, she has only expanded on her comedic skills, something that was perhaps inspired by her work with one actor in particular.
From her role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? to Bridesmaids and Gilmore Girls, Melissa McCarthy is one of the most effortlessly hilarious actors working today, with an impressive knack for improvisation that has led to some of the most infectiously funny scenes in modern cinema. Whether it be her character in Bridesmaids and the notoriety of the wedding dress scene, her portrayal of the ditsy chef Suki in Gilmore Girls or her work on Saturday Night Live, McCarthy continues to be a veteran of the comedy world, both on screen and off.
Bullock first worked with the actor on their 2013 film The Heat, directed by Paul Feig. The story follows an FBI Special Agent called Sarah who is paired with a police officer called Shannon, with the two being wildly different to the other and partnered on a case to bring down a ruthless drug lord.
It is another one of those stories about unexpected friendships and the calamity of working with those who have polar opposite personality traits, a trope that has lent itself to some of the greatest modern comedies, whether it be Stepbrothers, Blades of Glory or Bride Wars.
But while Bullock has collaborated with many funny actors over the years, from Ryan Reynolds to Sarah Paulson, she had the highest of praise for McCarthy, saying, “In comedy, you just know right away. Melissa’s pure genius, you know? Everyone was just waiting to see what would come out of that woman’s mouth.” The pair have an undeniable sense of chemistry that is the highlight of their time on screen together, with an electric friction that eventually leads to an unlikely and delightful friendship.
Since then, Bullock has leaned into her comedic prowess, starring in blockbuster hits like Oceans 8 and The Lost City, expanding on the qualities she might have picked up from McCarthy and continuing her quest to entertain through laughter.
