The Black Crowes brand AI songwriting as “lazy bullshit”
The Black Crowes have criticised the use of AI in songwriting, calling it “lazy bullshit” ahead of the release of their latest album.
Appearing on Rolling Stone’s Nashville Now podcast, singer Chris Robinson responded emphatically when asked his opinion on AI music: “It’s not songwriting,” he insisted.
Chris went on, “It’s lazy bullshit. Who the fuck are you, that you would walk around like you did something? You didn’t do shit.”
This strong condemnation comes in the run-up to the release of their highly anticipated new album, A Pound of Feathers, slated for a March 13th release.
It marks the first new music from the band since their last album, Happiness Bastards, was released in March 2024; the project was nominated for ‘Best Rock Album’ at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
Chris’s criticism touched upon the way society at large is embracing technology; “I find it unbelievable, as I look around our country and the world right now, and as things spiral out of control, as opinions become fact, as people’s fear and ignorance start to overtake their lives, that you’re gravitating toward something even more unreal,” he said.
The musician continued, “I would think the chaos would start to drive culturally through people to find something that is heartfelt and soulful, something dynamic. I could be less interested in fucking technology. You know what? The dentist still sucks. Get back to me when that is better.”
Brothers Chris and Richard will undertake an extensive tour of North America, running from May until August this year. They will also head over to the European continent in June and July for a run of gigs, including two dates in the UK.
Chris has previously celebrated the upcoming tour dates, sharing, “[The fact that] here we are in the year 2026, doing a full tour is incredible. [It’s great] that people care that we have this level of success and that people still enjoy it and that these songs are in their lives. They’re part of my life, and they’re a part of your life.”
