Talking Heads announce new compilation to celebrate 50th anniversary

Talking Heads have announced another archival release: Tentative Decisions: Demos & Live.

The latest blast from the past extends their 50th anniversary celebrations past June of last year, and offers fans an unprecedented look at their earliest years.

Arriving on March 6th, 2026, from Rhino, the three-disc collection will chart the evolution of the original trio, consisting of David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Tina Weymouth, through a compilation of newly shared demos and live recordings.

In total, 15 unreleased demos, which were recorded for CBS Records in September 1975 alongside over a dozen demos from 1975-1977, are included in the release.

Additionally, Tentative Decisions will also be released as a black-vinyl edition. This was originally released for Black Friday 2025 on clear vinyl. It features 1974 recordings of both ‘Psycho Killer’ and ‘Warning Sign’.

A press release shares that Tentative Decisions “uncovers a cache of live recordings from 1976 and 1977, capturing the band at key moments.”

It continues, “The October 1976 performance at Max’s Kansas City took place just a few weeks before the group met with Seymour Stein and signed to Sire Records. A few months later, the January 1977 show at The Jabberwocky Club in Syracuse would be among the last by the original trio before Jerry Harrison joined in March.”

Other 50th anniversary-related releases have included a touring screening of Stop Making Sense with Harrison, the release of the first-ever ‘Psycho Killer’ music video, which starred Saoirse Ronan, and a deluxe edition of Talking Heads: 77.

The album artwork for the new release opts for a simple white background with a simple, italicised font on top, which reads, “Tentative Decisions: Demos & Live is the title of a compilation by the band Talking Heads. Featuring early demo recordings and live performances, this collection traces the band’s progression from raw punk minimalism to a more structured, angular musical approach that reflects the broader shifts in post-punk aesthetics of the late 1970s.”

Recently, Byrne covered Olivia Rodrigo’s heartbreak hit, ‘Drivers Licence’, after collaborating on-stage with the popstar for a rendition of ‘Burning Down The House’ from 2025’s Governors Ball.
