Takashi Miike to direct ‘Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo’, starring Shun Oguri, Lily James and Liv Morgan
Coveted Japanese film director Takashi Miike is set to turn his sights on Hollywood. He will direct Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo from Neon production studios.
The thriller will feature Shun Oguri and Lily James, along with WWE star Liv Morgan, who is making her movie debut. Oguri and Miike are familiar collaborators, having worked on projects such as Crows Zero and sequel Terra Formars together.
Written by Daisuke Tengan, who also wrote Audition and 13 Assassins, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo will follow the character of Bad Lieutenant, played by Oguri. He is a corrupt gambler in the Metropolitan Police Force, who is thrown into a tangled case after an FBI agent, played by James, arrives in Tokyo to investigate the disappearance of a politician’s daughter (Morgan). Meanwhile, a deviant killer operating in the yakuza underworld seems to be shadowing their moves.
The film will be a US-Japan co-production, produced by Jeremy Thomas for Recorded Picture Company, Sam Pressman for Pressman Film, Naoaki Kitajima for Nippon TV and Misako Saka for OLM. Neon handles the film’s theatrical rights in North America, but they’ll be at the Cannes market later in May to sell the international rights.
Miike’s new film is yet another hot title for Neon, who have garnered an increase in attention after the awards season success of Anora. The next Neon release, The Life Of Chuck, will be released in cinemas in June.
Miike has also been in the headlines recently, as it was announced that he will team up with Brat musician Charli XCX for a film whose details are being curiously withheld.
The director is an accomplished figure. Far Out previously called Miike’s 1999 cult classic Audition “a visceral and eternally memorable critique of the patriarchy” and included the movie in a list of the top ten most terrifying horror movie scenes of all time.
