Chess Records: A brief history of Chicago’s legendary blues label
From Muddy Waters to Chuck Berry to Etta James.

Muddy Waters was an American blues musician, singer, songwriter and guitarist widely regarded as the “Father of Modern Chicago Blues”.
Born McKinley Morganfield, he transformed the Delta blues tradition into an electrified urban sound after moving from Mississippi to Chicago during the 1940s. His pioneering recordings for Chess Records, including ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’, ‘Mannish Boy’, ‘I’m Ready’ and ‘Got My Mojo Working’, laid the foundations for modern electric blues and profoundly influenced the development of rock and roll.
Waters’ music inspired generations of artists, including the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and the Allman Brothers Band. His legacy remains central to the history of blues, rock and popular music.
