How Stanley Kubrick chose the novels he adapted: “I like to be surprised”
“I read.”

‘Eyes Wide Shut’ is a 1999 psychological drama directed, produced and co-written by Stanley Kubrick. Based on Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella ‘Traumnovelle’, the film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a married couple whose relationship is tested after a confession of sexual fantasy leads to a surreal nocturnal journey through New York City’s hidden world of desire, secrecy and obsession.
As Kubrick’s final film, completed shortly before his death, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ divided critics upon release but has since undergone significant critical reappraisal.
Praised for its hypnotic atmosphere, meticulous visual style and exploration of sexuality, fidelity and identity, it is now widely regarded as one of Kubrick’s most enigmatic and compelling works.
A tense relationship.
It’s not Christopher McQuarrie, obviously.
