Sydney Sweeney reveals she suffered concussions from boxer while shooting ‘Christy’
Sydney Sweeney has detailed the concussion she suffered while shooting her latest movie, Christy.
The new film, which is set for release in UK and Irish cinemas on November 28th, 2025, is a biopic of the trailblazing female boxer Christy Martin.
Christy explores how Martin managed to make a name for herself in the cut-throat world of boxing after leaving her small West Virginia town behind, and the many difficulties that she faced along the way, including her abusive husband.
Now, during a new interview with The Guardian, Sweeney revealed that the fighting scenes were genuine, stating, “Oh yeah, they were all real. Every fight that you see, we’re hitting each other.” She also shared, “I had concussions, there were some bloody noses.”
Sweeney then said that she “loved it” and wasn’t frightened by the real-life injuries she suffered while portraying Martin on set.
For the film, Sweeney fought against professional boxer Naomi Graham, who portrays Laila Ali, the daughter of Mohammed Ali, in the film, which taught the Euphoria actor what it’s like to step in the ring with a fighter.
She explained, “The lady who played Laila Ali is an actual professional boxer. She’s in the air force and fights for Team USA – she hit hard and it was very, very real. She’s how I got my concussion.”
The actor then said that she “became a fighter” for the movie, adding, “It was such an exhilarating feeling. In between takes, I’d be like: ‘I think I won that round’.”
While Christy is not available to watch in UK and Irish cinemas until later this month, it has already been released in the United States, taking home $400,000 on its opening day in theatres across 2,000 screens nationwide.
