‘Superman’ soars high during second box office weekend

The latest instalment of the Superman movies, directed by James Gunn, has had another great weekend at the box office after the highest-grossing first weekend in the franchise’s entire history.

After its release on July 11th, Superman raked in $217million, including $122million in American sales and $95m in international markets. This made it one of the most successful Superman blockbusters and one of the best efforts from DC Studios in recent memory.

Superman held strong at the box office across its second weekend. James Gunn’s project earned $57.6m domestically and $45.2m internationally, bringing its total to $235m domestically and $406m worldwide.

Projections now predict it will earn around $600m globally, which would fall behind 2013’s Superman film Man of Steel. However, the numbers are currently as promising as the reviews.

Superman‘s second weekend ease is minus 54 per cent. This is a decent result, on par with the box office drop off seen for Deadpool & Wolverine. Thunderbolts’ second weekend results, in comparison to the first, were minus 56 per cent, while Captain America: Brave New World fell harder and faster, by 68 per cent.

Superman currently has little competition at the box office. Revived 1990s classic I Know What You Did Last Summer opened at only $13m, with a net production cost of $18m. Surprisingly, Smurfs has a poorer box office reception, making $11m on its opening weekend.

Elsewhere, a kiss scene in the latest Superman movie has been removed from screenings of the superhero blockbuster in India. The film, directed by James Gunn, originally featured a 33-second scene between Superman and Lois Lane in which they are seen passionately kissing. However, the Central Board of Film Certification deemed this inappropriate for Indian audiences and subsequently cut it from the movie.
