‘Superman’ opens with highest-grossing weekend in franchise history
The latest instalment of the Superman movies, directed by James Gunn, has opened with the highest-grossing weekend in the franchise’s entire history.
The film, released on July 11th, has grossed a total of $217 million so far, including $122 million in American sales and $95 million in international markets. This makes it not only one of the most successful Superman blockbusters but also one of the best efforts from DC Studios in recent memory.
It follows a challenging few years for the production house, which has created a number of Hollywood misfires, including The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and most infamously last year’s Joker: Folie à Deux.
However, the renewed success of Superman, which stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult, comes as a welcome relief as DC Studios is set to begin on a new era of storytelling in its newest superhero universe.
Superman has also become one of the highest-grossing hits of the year so far, joining The Minecraft Movie and Lilo and Stitch as the only three films to have generated over $100 million over the course of its opening weekend.
The box office hit will certainly allay fears that Superman had to produce a huge financial offering in order to break even on its production costs. However, director Gunn recently hit back at these allegations, dismissing rumours that the studio’s future was dependent on the film’s success as he claimed the stakes are “not as big as people make it out to be.”
Elsewhere, the filmmaker hoped that the message of the film would resonate with audiences, as he said the plot is rooted in the principle of “basic human kindness.”
