‘Supergirl’ star Milly Alcock talks fighting with fandoms: “I can’t really stop them”
Supergirl actor Milly Alcock is a realist when it comes to the types of criticism her upcoming DC film most likely will receive.
In a recent Vanity Fair interview, the 25-year-old star looked back at her time on HBO’s House of the Dragon series, where she was part of an intense fandom.
Ruminating on what she learned from that experience, the forthcoming superhero shared, “It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on.”
She added, “We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”
In 2022, she also shared with Nylon that online discourse makes her “incredibly anxious,” as it “doesn’t benefit me.”
Earlier in her career, she was less sure-footed: “Me seeing my face constantly is straining. No one should have to do that. It fuckin’ sucks, man.”
Commenting on the industry at large, she added, “I don’t know how the socialites of the world can do that. It’s kind of driving me off the wall. It’s an incredibly difficult space to navigate.”
Alcock will star in the Craig Gillespie adventure movie alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa. In the film, Supergirl travels across the galaxy on a murderous quest for revenge
James Gunn, Superman director and Supergirl producer, has heaped praise upon Alcock, saying, “Milly Alcock, who plays Supergirl, might be the best bit of casting I’ve ever done in my entire life. I think she’s absolutely stunning in the movie.”
Alcock doesn’t quite have this level of self-belief. She admitted in a different interview that she struggled to realise what a huge moment her bagging the lead was, but “Eventually I realised the only way through was to trust myself. I always believe life is right on time. Things happen when they’re supposed to, whether you feel ready or not.”
Supergirl lands in cinemas on June 26th.
