‘Succession’ creator Jesse Armstrong to make new movie for HBO
Succession creator Jesse Armstrong is moving to the big screen. Following the finale of the Roy family saga in 2023, the writer is set to make a movie with HBO Films centring around an international financial crisis.
The untitled project will see Armstrong reunite with fellow Succession executive producer Frank Rich, whose credits include the political sitcom Veep and the 2024 limited series The Regime, starring Kate Winslet. Both Armstrong and Rich are under overall deals with HBO.
Although the specifics of the film are still under wraps, it is said to be based on an original idea about four friends who come together during a financial crisis.
Armstrong’s next move following the four-season run of Succession has been hotly anticipated, with many assuming that he would create another series. The hit comedy-drama was an across-the-board success, racking up no fewer than 75 Emmy nominations and earning 19 wins. It is widely considered to be one of the best series of the 21st century and even of all time.
Before creating Succession, Armstrong was already an established talent in the television world, having created the British comedy series Peep Show and Fresh Meat and written for The Thick of It, Veep, and Black Mirror, among others.
The transition to film won’t be a new one, though. Armstrong already boasts an Oscar nomination for writing Armando Ianucci’s 2009 political satire In the Loop and wrote the screenplay for Christopher Morris’ 2010 satire Four Lions.
He also served as screenwriter for Downhill, the critically panned 2020 adaptation of Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure.
According to Variety, the new HBO project is set to begin filming by the end of this year. Armstrong is already writing the script, and the studio is meeting with potential stars.
