‘Succession’ creator Jesse Armstrong dismisses the possibility of a spin-off show
Despite having just walked away from the Primetime Emmys with the lion’s share of awards, the creator of the critically acclaimed HBO drama Succession, Jesse Armstrong, has ruled out any spin-off shows based in the same universe.
Although spin-off shows have previously been rumoured, Armstrong told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that it “doesn’t feel like the most interesting thing to do to me”. Continuing, he added that he had “written them [the characters] enough now”.
Taking home the prize for ‘Best Drama Series’ at the Emmys along with a near clean sweep of acting awards, with each of Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen earning statuettes, the final series of Succession had critics claiming that it was one of television’s most important contemporary dramas. Despite being the most iconic character in the series, Logan Roy, played by Brian Cox, failed to earn himself a nomination at the awards show.
Asked about the possibility of doing a spin-off show, Macfadyen, who played the fan-favourite Tom Wambsgans, stated backstage at the Emmys: “I would never say never, but highly unlikely… it would all depend on what Jesse Armstrong wanted to do”.
Continuing, he added: “But Jesse’s instinct, and all our instinct is that it ended in the right place. We didn’t tie it up, we left them to just carry on in their strange and frightening world…As nice as it would be to work with everybody again, I think it would be strange to do a spin-off. But who knows?”.
Elsewhere at the Emmys, the stressful comedy series The Bear took home the prize for ‘Best Comedy Series’, with cast members Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri taking home awards for their stellar performances.
