Stevie Wonder responds to rumours he’s faking being blind: “You know the truth”
Stevie Wonder has dispelled the famous rumour that he is not blind, telling audiences at his most recent shows, “You know the truth.”
The Motown legend has recently been touring the UK, culminating in his headline slot at BST Hyde Park in London on July 12th. However, during these dates, Wonder was also forced to confront a longstanding conspiracy that he is actually able to see, hoping to put the rumours firmly to bed.
Wonder addressed the decades-old myth at his Cardiff concert last week, telling the crowd in an impassioned speech: “I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking, ‘When did I want to let the world know this?’ But I wanted to say it right now.”
He told his fans they “know the truth,” before going on to explain his story by saying: “Truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind. Now, that was a blessing because it’s allowed me to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight. See people in the spirit of them, not how they look. Not what colour they are, but what colour is their spirit?”
Having played in Manchester, Birmingham, and Lytham before concluding his Love, Life and Song tour in London over the weekend, Wonder delivered a stellar set to match the previous occasions he has headlined Hyde Park, both in 2016 and 2019.
On the night, he was joined by a series of support acts including Ezra Collective, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Three Sacred Souls, making the R&B legend’s gig one of the hottest tickets for this year’s line-up of Hyde Park concerts.
Other acts who headlined their own nights in included Neil Young, Noah Kahan, and Olivia Rodrigo. However, the planned gig from Jeff Lynne’s ELO, which was billed as their final ever live performance, had to be cancelled due to health issues.
