Stevie Nicks has written a new song in memory of Prince

At the Pollstar Awards on April 16th, Stevie Nicks detailed her new solo album and revealed she’s written a song in memory of Prince.

Prince and Nicks shared a strong bond, which led to both artists creating iconic tracks in their back catalogues. Notably, Prince was inspired by her song, ‘Edge of Seventeen’, when making ‘When Doves Cry’, and Nicks also credits ‘Little Red Corvette’ as the fuel she needed to write ‘Stand Back’.

Now, Nicks is using their friendship as inspiration again for an untitled song from her first solo album in 14 years. “I call it the ‘Ghost’ record because it just kind of happened in the last couple of weeks,” Nicks said of the album at the Pollstar Awards.

There is a general theme running through the album, as Nicks celebrates different men who have played pivotal parts in her life, such as Prince.

She explained of the album: “I have seven songs and they are autobiographical, real stories where I’m not pulling any punches for probably the first time in my life. They’re not airy-fairy songs that you’re wondering who they’re about, but you really don’t get it. They are real stories, memories of mine, of fantastic men.”

Nicks then revealed that her late friend Prince had inspired one of the seven tracks and shared an anecdote about ‘The Purple One.‘. The Fleetwood Mac vocalist explained to the crowd that she saw Purple Rain in the cinema, but a violent scene involving the musician slapping Apollonia caused her to “freak out” and “go to the fancy bathroom and sit there for the rest of the whole movie.”

Rather than lie to Prince, Nicks told Prince that she only enjoyed the first half of the film and bought him “a gift” as an apology for not watching the entirety of the movie. She recalled the conversation, “‘It’s a really beautiful 24 carat necklace with little gold hearts on it.’ And he goes ‘I don’t want your necklace’ and then he said, this is in the song, this is where the record began, ‘You always bring me a gift. You never bring me you.’”

Nicks continued: “I said, ‘I am ready to write’, so that’s what I’m doing so I can go on the road and do what I love the most.”

Looking ahead to her tour, Nicks thanked fans who’ll “take care” of her and defiantly said, “It doesn’t matter if I’m 77, it matters that I’m protected, watched over and loved and that people give me their hearts.”

Earlier this week, Nicks confirmed a new set of headline shows, which could be the perfect time to preview new material. She is also set to play stadiums later this year with Billy Joel.
