Steven Tyler will not be returning to touring, confirms Matt Sorum

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler will not be returning to touring, according to Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum.

After performing live at the annual Jam For Janie charity event earlier in February, the question was asked of whether the vocalist would be able to handle a return to the road alongside the rest of his Aerosmith bandmates despite his recent health issues, but Sorum has now confirmed that his close friend had only made this appearance as a one-off.

Speaking to Long Island radio station WBAB, Sorum said: “Let me just explain what’s happening with Steven Tyler, ’cause he’s a really good friend. It was a really big moment for him because he hurt himself bad. Now, is he gonna tour again? No, he’s not.”

The drummer continued: “Steven cannot put himself under the rigours of doing a full worldwide tour because there’s a lot of pressure. And if you’re not a singer, you wouldn’t understand what he goes through, but he’s 77 years old and he’s a perfectionist. And if he doesn’t sing correctly, it bothers him.”

In August 2024, Aerosmith announced that they would be retiring from touring after Tyler sustained serious damage to his vocal cords, with their final shows being rescheduled from their 2023 ‘Peace Out’ tour.

Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton stated at the time that the decision to cease touring with the band was a difficult one, stating that “we don’t know what the future holds but it won’t include touring.”

Hamilton also concluded that there would be no scenario in which the rest of the band continued without Tyler as their frontman, declaring that he “can’t imagine” what it would be like to perform as a group without such a core member of the band.
