Steven Spielberg remarks on Timothée Chalamet’s opera and ballet comments

Steven Spielberg has weighed in on Timothée Chalamet‘s viral criticism of the ballet and the opera.

During a SXSW keynote conversation, the coveted director made a jab at the Marty Supreme actor, who is under fire for calling out dancers and opera singers.

The comments arose as Spielberg ruminated on the importance of movie theatres, sharing, “For me, the real experience comes when we can influence a community to congregate in a strange, dark space where all of us are strangers.”

He went on, “At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with. And there’s nothing like that.”

Gearing his commentary toward the 30-year-old star, Spielberg quipped, “It happens in movies, and in concerts. And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way.”

The audience broke out into laughter, but Spielberg wasn’t finished: “And we want that to be sustained. We want that to go forever.”

The Call Me By Your Name actor continues to receive a slew of criticism after he hit out at the ballet and opera community in a Variety and CNN town hall with Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though, like, no one cares about this anymore.’ All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there,” the star in the viral interview.

Another celebrity who was not best pleased with these comments was Everything, Everywhere, All at Once actor Jamie Lee Curtis, whose eldest daughter, Annie, is a dance instructor.

In light of his remarks, she shared recently, “His comments are silly, and I’m sorry that they’re going to be a bit of his legacy now. I’m sure he regrets the comment because you can’t throw those art forms under a bus.”

Despite the fumble, Chalamet is still hoping to take home the Oscar for ‘Best Actor’ for his performance in Marty Supreme in the ceremony set to take place on March 15th.
