Steven Knight addresses rumours about Cillian Murphy returning for ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has addressed the rumours that Cillian Murphy will be reprising his role as the popular Tommy Shelby in a new Peaky Blinders movie, set to begin filming at Digbeth Loc Studios in September 2024.
At the premiere of Knight’s new BBC series This Town, he was asked whether the Oppenheimer actor would be involved in the project, for which he had previously only put together the script.
Discussing the forthcoming movie, he told BirminghamWorld that Murphy is “definitely” returning, adding: “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.”
The screenwriter went on to praise the actor for his Academy Award win, claiming that it was “so deserved”. Continuing, he described Murphy as “brilliant” and someone who “deserved everything he gets”.
Murphy has mentioned his appreciation for Peaky Blinders in various previous interviews, saying that he would likely be willing to return to the show if the circumstances were right. However, before now, there was no confirmation about his involvement in a new Peaky Blinders series or movie, which sparked numerous rumours about whether the stories were truly over.
Knight first announced plans to write a spin-off movie in 2022, however, details around the project remained unclear for a while. Although he previously stated that season six represented an ending to the show in its current “incarnation”, he was also transparent to Esquire about where he planned to go next, clarifying that the film will “carry on the family and the stories into the Second World War”.
While, at the time, the specific direction of the film was largely unclear, he alluded to following the success of the final season, adding: “For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be.”
Various actors made their debut appearance in the final season, including Amber Anderson, James Frecheville, and Knight himself. It’s likely that the film will present a series of new characters and storylines while anchoring the familiarity and popularity of the show’s earlier premise with Murphy’s Tommy Shelby.
