Stephen Stills would reunite with Neil Young and Graham Nash for Kamala Harris campaign
Stephen Stills has reflected on the possibility of one day reuniting with his former musical comrades Neil Young and Graham Nash, explaining what that would be like without input from the late David Crosby.
The four musicians formed one of the most legendary supergroups of all time, CSNY, creating folk-rock music that defined the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Although many maintained hope for a reunion, especially after various members teased the possibility around 2016 and 2017, Crosby’s death in 2023 marked the end of any possibilities for a full unification.
Speaking to Variety about Crosby’s contributions and whether there’s any hope for a partial reunion after his passing, Stills described him as an “integral” part of the band and said that he would be willing to reunite with Young and Nash if it was part of a campaign in support of Kamala Harris for the current US election.
“Would we, and should we, you know? Because David was such an integral part,” he said, continuing, “everybody was an integral part of it. Graham was just as creative vocally as David. But it’s just the physiology of it. My little rasp, and Graham’s Celtic keen, as I call it, and David’s warm little undertones just made for a magic that can’t be duplicated.”
Despite teasing that only something as topical and culturally important as the campaign would elicit some sway, he confirmed that a reunion is still highly unlikely at this point because it wouldn’t be “quite the same” without Crosby.
“I mean, the election might be an excuse. I would do that for Kamala Harris,” he said, adding, “But, otherwise, it’s a Pyrrhic exercise — it’s never gonna be quite the same. So, I don’t know. I’m obviously at loose ends on what I’m gonna do next anyway, because I’m getting bored. So I’ve gotta get out there and do something.”
CSNY’s last full lineup performance occurred in 2013 at the Bridge School Benefit concert in California.
Neil Young’s support of Kamala Harris
Earlier this month, Young supported the current Vice President and explained why he thought she would make a worthy president following the election on November 5th.
In a statement, he described Harris as an “honest, forthright truth-teller who is experienced, free from ambiguity or evasiveness, who goes straight to the point.”
He also said she would make a great country leader because she is “clear-headed” and “young enough” to be in office long-term, which would benefit the country. Regarding the American justice system, he also believes Harris would be “unafraid” to hold criminals accountable and “uphold the law of the USA.”
A few months prior, the singer also permitted Governor Tim Walz to use his song ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’. Donald Trump controversially used the song at his campaign announcement in 2015, leading to Young threatening to sue and a longstanding bitterness between the two.
However, Trump’s admiration for Young predates the latest political feuds. During a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone, the politician said he had listened to Young’s music “for years” and that “he’s a terrific guy.”
After Young disapproved of his use of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ in 2015, his representative said that he “won’t be using it again” because “Trump likes Neil very much.”
