Stellan Skarsgård admits he’s “on overtime” following stroke

Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård has recently opened up about his health struggles, revealing that he suffered a stroke three years ago that has since made filming more challenging.

In conversation with Vulture, the star revealed that he had previously fallen ill in between the two parts of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, as well as the seasons of the Star Wars series Andor. He joked, “It was perfect timing.”

He opened up about what this meant physically, sharing, “Suddenly, I can’t come up with names. I can’t follow a thought or make an argument that spans several sentences that gets to the point […] That is extremely frustrating. But on the other hand, I’m alive. I can work.”

As a result, his language became “weaker”. Skarsgård also had to wear an earpiece on the set of Dune: Part Two.

Despite the health scare, Skarsgård stressed that he is “not afraid of dying, but I am afraid of not being capable of living. That is a fear. I feel a little more like I live under the sword now. Because I’ve lived a naughty life. And I’m 74, which is already on overtime.”

He then turned to his eight children, a few of which are children. He said, “With all my eight kids, there’s one thing I’ve been afraid of every time I have a new kid … that they’re boring. Luckily, none of them were. I consider myself a nepo daddy,” he laughed, “because I get so much goodwill and maybe jobs because of them.”

Skarsgård will next appear in Joachim Trier’s Oscar-contender, Sentimental Value. The official synopsis for the movie reveals: “Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film.”

The film will be released in US theatres on November 7th.
