Stella Donnelly announces new album and releases single, ‘Feel it Change’

Stella Donnelly has announced that her upcoming album ‘Love and Fortune’, will be released on November 7th.

The Naarm-based, Boorloo-raised artist also shared a new track that came alongside the announcement. She debuted the single, ‘Feel it Change’ on BBC 6 Music with Huw Stephens.

Throughout the new release, Donnelly uses whimsical ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ to uplift the otherwise heartbreaking lyrics, concocting a toxic alchemy of confession and obsession. “I love you, baby but I’m scared to be near you / It’s not the same, it’s not the same when you’re here,” she sings on the addictive chorus. The instrumental melody line complements her voice through echo and repetition.

Reflecting on the creation of ‘Feel It Change’, Donnelly shared, “I wrote this song on a baritone guitar in the shed of my sharehouse, plugged into all of my housemates’ overdrive pedals.”

She continued, “I think the neighbours started getting shitty after a while because I stewed on the same chords for ages. It’s about the rumination of slowly peeling off the band-aid of a relationship that was doomed to fall apart. Trying to capture that phase of a break-up where all you do is bristle and fizz in resentment and finger pointing.”

Two other tracks are already available to stream from the upcoming project. ‘Standing Ovation’, the opener of the album, is a soft, sparse yet strong ballad that picks up speed in the second half, while ‘Baths’ will follow right on from ‘Feel it Change’.

Discussing the album as a whole, Donnelly added, “These songs wouldn’t leave me alone,” Donnelly says. “Like seagulls, they screamed at me when I rode to work, they pecked at me while I wrote essays, and they stole my chips the second I thought I was happier without music.” The musician took time away from an intense period of touring to let the music return to her.
