‘Star Wars’ announce new movie ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’

Star Wars have announced details of the new movie The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will serve as the franchise’s first film since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

The upcoming feature-length spinoff from their flagship TV series will be helmed by the show’s co-creator, writer, and occasional director Jon Favreau, with Star Wars regulars Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy set to produce.

Several new Star Wars projects are currently in various stages of development. However, with Deadline noting The Mandalorian & Grogu is expected to begin shooting before the end of 2024, the freshly-announced movie has become the number one priority for Disney and Lucasfilm.

In a statement, Favreau said of the upcoming project: “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Additionally, Lucasfilm president, Kennedy, added: “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

As of yet, a fourth season of The Mandalorian has yet to be officially announced. Furthermore, with The Mandalorian & Grogu now eying a big screen bow and Filoni also on deck to direct a cinematic crossover featuring various characters from the small screen arm of the franchise, it seems uncertain whether it’ll go ahead.

Previously, it was assumed Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s untitled Star Wars story featuring the return of Daisy Ridley’s Rey would be the next major movie to hit cinemas, having been awarded a tentative release date of May 22nd, 2026. However, The Mandalorian & Grogu could realistically end up in front of cameras first, considering Obaid-Chinoy’s film has yet to settle on a firm start date for production.

Additionally, leading man Pedro Pascal’s schedule could prove to be a sticking point. Season two of The Last of Us also gearing up to shoot, and he’s also part of the cast for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel. If necessary, he could carry out the majority of his duties from the recording booth, as he did on the last series of The Mandalorian, and let stunt doubles handle the rest.
