The always brilliant Annie Clark (AKA St. Vincent) is most certainly the kind of calibre of artist you could label as an auteur. Her sound is specific and her vision is always unaltered by contemporaries. She strives for her own spot on the mantel and songs like ‘New York’, as well as the accompanying video, mark her place definitively.
The bright and colourful clip was directed by Alex Da Corte who said “I think Annie’s New York is the New York of my dreams—one that is blurry and fractured, dreamy and flat. It is the Toontown to my Hollywood. It is beautiful but slightly out of reach.”
The song itself is a dream-like romance only detracted by modern life. It is summed up with her brilliant line “You’re the only motherfucker in the city who can handle me”. The song started form a simple text to a friend stating “New York isn’t New York without you” and that sentiment is perfectly encapsulated in the song.
