Ahead of Nine Inch Nails becoming one of the latest entrants into the esteemed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, St. Vincent has paid tribute to the rockers. In a collaboration with Amazon Music, the musician has released a brand new cover of ‘Piggy’ which features no other than Dave Grohl on drums.
This cover is part of a new series curated by Amazon which has seen the streaming platform team up with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020. As well as St. Vincent taking on Nine Inch Nails, Amazon have also got Real Estate taking on The Doobie Brothers’ ‘What a Fool Believes’ and The Kills sharing their version of T. Rex’s ‘Cosmic Dancer’. On top of that, they have also got Eyelids to offer up their take on Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy the Silence’, and Jehnny Beth of Savages taking on Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Closer’.
St. Vincent has given an explanation as to why she has chosen to cover the 1994 track taken from Nine Inch Nails’ sophomore record The Downward Spiral. “‘Piggy’ remains one of my favourite Nails songs to this day. I am obsessed with the slinky tambourine that is just a little lazy in feel,” Annie Clark said.
“And when I took this song apart to cover it, it took me a long time to really understand the immensity of the groove. It’s a dark, industrial reggae. Muscular, but never as distorted as you imagined it when you think of it in your head… They made a complicated thing seem easy and made big, bold sonic choices.”
Earlier, this week it was revealed that the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame they it is permanently changing its ceremony schedule due to the pandemic.
The news comes after it was previously announced earlier this year that the 2020 ceremony, which was originally set to take place in May, would move to November and take place in virtual form in the wake of the ongoing crisis.
