Spotify down for thousands of users as platform issues statement
Spotify, the biggest music streaming platform in the world, has experienced a glitch, causing more than 48,000 users to report an outage worldwide. The outage affects both the app and the web player.
Some users, including Far Out staff, reported a slow or unresponsive service. Others suggested the app was allowing downloaded music to play. However, the search function was unresponsive, and they were unable to view artist accounts.
On April 16th, complaints peaked at approximately 1:30pm BST. Soon after, Spotify wrote on X: “We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out.” No further information was provided.
Spotify told the BBC they were rolling out an update to their users, which includes more than 675 million people worldwide. A Spotify spokesperson stated that a fix for the search issues is rolling out, but Spotify are still “working to resolve” the broader outage “as soon as possible”.
They were also quick to assure users that their accounts are still safe: “The reports of this being a security hack are false,” they clearly stated on X.
The service were also in the news earlier this month. Spotify reacted to online speculation that premium services would soon include advertisements. They wrote on X: “There is a rumor circulating that Spotify is putting ads into premium music listening. This rumor is false. Premium music listening is and will remain ad-free.”
The price of this “premium music listening” has increased over the last few years. In the summer of 2023, the platform increased premium subscription fees from £9.99 per month to £10.99 in the United Kingdom, marking the first time the company had implemented a hike in its ten-year run.
