“I’m just going to be standing there, crying”: Sophie Turner’s favourite song of all time
If Sophie Turner wasn’t quite famous enough after acting in Game of Thrones and the occasional movies during the years that followed it, then you would imagine a reported relationship with Chris Martin from Coldplay would probably seal the deal.
After all, he’s not a bloke who tends to do “oh you wouldn’t know her, she works in boots” partners, as Dakota Johnson and Gwyneth Paltrow stand testament to.
But given Turner is apparently quite a big fan of songs that will bring tears to your eyes, it probably makes a fair bit of sense, as does the idea that Martin is essentially working his way through superhero franchises, starting off with Paltrow of the Avengers, Johnson of Madame Web and now X-Men’s Turner. Maybe he needs saving, who knows.
Turner, though, is doing just fine on her own regardless, having received some decent reviews for her performance in the recent ITV mini-series Joan last year, the real-life story of a London jewel thief in the 1980s, and she’s signed up to take the lead as Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider reboot.
That might need to be a hit for Turner, though, given her latest film outing, a thriller called Trust, disappeared, if not without a trace, then with a fair few reviews that included words like ‘clumsy’ and ‘convoluted’. There are higher hopes for Turner’s other heist-related project, a Prime Video series called Steal that sees her play an office worker caught up in the theft of billions.
Another reason her supposed new flame makes some sense is that Turner is obviously a music fan, and a fan of guitar-based music more specifically. She went to Glastonbury festival last year, where she told Elle she was most looking forward to seeing the ‘Godfather of Grunge’ himself, Neil Young, and hearing him dust off one of his most famous acoustic songs specifically.
She said: “I am so excited – it’s going to be a blast. I can’t wait to see Neil Young – ‘Harvest Moon’ is my favourite song of all time. I’m just going to be standing there, crying.”
That was the title track from Young’s 1992 album that saw him go back to the mood of his most famous work from 20 years previously, the majestic Harvest. He reunited many of the musicians that worked on that 1972 album, and the result was another classic, newer songs like ‘From Hank to Hendrix’ standing up against anything Young had written previously, and ‘Harvest Moon’ ending up a staple of his live sets, including last year’s Glastonbury headline spot.
It’s also a song that has achieved some fame due to the playing of a broom as part of the percussion, Young’s former wife Pegi occasionally joining him on stage in order to ‘sweep’ along to the tune. Young is just one of the artists Turner is into, though, as she added: “I like a lot of kind of, old stuff? I love ‘Seabird’ by The Alessi Brothers, I think that’s one of my all-time favourites. But there are a lot of different artists on (her playlist) actually; there’s some Role Model, Little Simz, Glass Animals, Sierra Ferrell, Rachel Chinouriri – oh, and David Gray, for some classics.”
Meanwhile, any old Game of Thrones fans who miss the days when Turner knocked about with Kit Harrington will also be pleased to hear the pair will be back on screen together soon in The Dreadful, a British gothic horror movie set in the 15th century.
