Sophie Nyweide, former Hollywood child actor, dead at 24

Sophie Nyweide, who starred alongside Russell Crowe in Noah in 2014 and Jessica Alba in An Invisible Sign in 2010, passed away on April 14th, 2025.

Nyweide’s family paid tribute to the actor in an online obituary and wrote of her acting experience: “She dreamed (more like demanded!) to be an actor, without ever knowing her mother was an actor, so she did that too with an ease we all marveled about. She seemed happiest on a movie set, becoming someone else.”

The family also mentioned struggles Nyweide had in her short life. “Sophie was a kind and trusting girl. Often this left her open to being taken advantage of by others. She wrote and drew voraciously and much of this art depicts the depth she had and it also represents the pain she suffered,” the obituary reads.

“Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas,” it continues. “Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses, and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her are heartbroken their efforts couldn’t save her from her fate.”

Nyweide’s resilience was referenced in the obituary: “She self medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death. She repeatedly said she would ‘handle it’ on her own and was compelled to reject the treatment that might possibly have saved her life,” it added.

It concluded: “Sophie. A life ended too soon. May it not be in vain. May we all learn from her brief life on earth and do better. Yes, we must all protect our children and do better.”

Her family have asked people to donate to RAINN in Nyweide’s name, a charity “working tirelessly to support survivors, fight for justice, and create a world free from sexual violence.”

Nyweide’s first acting job was in the 2006 film Bella, followed by an episode of Law & Order.

She also played the daughter of Gael García Bernal and Michelle Williams’ characters in the 2009 film Mammoth. Her final onscreen feature was on the ABC hidden-camera show What Would You Do? in 2015.
