The song that kills your sex drive, according to science

Who remembers the story about Hudson Mohawke’s ‘Cbat’ ruining one unfortunate young man’s sex life? In a brazen act of foolishness, one Reddit user took to the social media website in 2022 to share a little too much about both his intimate relationships and questionable playlist choices for such occasions and revealed that the Scottish producer’s 2011 deep cut had been part of the soundtrack to his lovemaking sessions for over two years much to the dismay of his girlfriend. As you can imagine, the ridicule and memes ensued for some time afterwards, and very few people have been able to listen to the dance song in the same way ever since.

With all judgement put to one side, whether or not you want to chance to play HudMo in the bedroom or would prefer to stick to the tried and tested option of Barry White is your choice entirely, but is there any song that is sure to kill the mood unlike any other? Science seems to think it has found the answer to that question, although it’s not a theory that has been tested on humans.

In an experiment conducted by scientists across the globe, it was revealed that the throbbing bass tones of Skrillex’s ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ can have a negative effect on the mating habits of mosquitoes. The variation of high and low frequencies in the infamous dubstep track is something that disrupts signals being transmitted between species, and as a result, they’re less likely to court a partner and are instead ‘entertained’ by the track—a worrying incel inference.

The study, which was published in the scientific journal Acta Tropica, might mean that there’s an end in sight for the transmission of insect-borne diseases and nasty flesh bites, but it does beg the question of whether there’s a specific sound that would have the same effect on humans and completely ruin all of our sexual encounters.

If you were to conduct a search for couples who have done the deed to Skrillex, while you won’t get any responses from the Aedes aegypti species, you might find a handful of human souls brave enough to admit that it’s been on their sex playlist. That being said, it’s also easy to imagine the song’s shrill and abrasive tones being a repellant for our own kind, so perhaps there’s some truth to it slamming the brakes on our sex drives as well.

It would be impossible to categorically say if there’s any song that hasn’t been played in this scenario, but there’s definitely plenty of music out there that would severely test a couple’s sexual chemistry. For example, if you’re out there trying to get it on to Merzbow, then I’ve got a lot of serious questions to ask you. Amon Tobin’s aptly titled ‘Bad Sex’ might have a rhythm that lends itself to a seductive setting, but his use of samples from Chris Morris’ Blue Jam radio sketch show are more than enough to convince you to keep your clothes on.

So there you have it: mosquitoes are less likely to breed when subjected to Skrillex, so if you’re being plagued by bites (excluding love bites), then this is the perfect song for ruining their sex drive.

If, on the other hand, you’re looking to play it when you’re getting down to business and are happy running the risk of it having the same effect – well, you do you.
