Sofia Vergara reveals her favourite TV show: “I’m fascinated by it”
She might be best known for her work on TV, but Sofia Vergara has had more than her fair share of movie success, too. Some of her earliest appearances come in things like Soul Plane, an early Kevin Hart romp, and Lords of Dogtown, Catherine Hardwicke’s cult favourite skateboard movie.
In recent years, she has done a lot of voice work, including in Despicable Me 4, Strays, and, regrettably, The Emoji Movie. Look, nobody’s perfect…
But you can’t deny that Vergara’s main arena is TV. She is best known for her portrayal of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, the much younger second wife of Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) in the hit sitcom Modern Family. Her time on the show landed her three SAG awards and a nomination for a Golden Globe. Her other big role is as the title role in Netflix’s Griselda, while she’s also cropped up in The Simpsons, Family Guy, and as a judge on America’s Got Talent.
With plenty of great TV moments under her belt, one wonders what Vergara herself thinks of the state of the medium. In an interview with Moviefone, which was hosted by Reese Witherspoon, for some reason, the Colombian-born star was asked what her favourite TV show was, not named Modern Family. Given that this interview was conducted in 2015, you can probably guess what she picked.
Sofia Vergara’s favourite show…
“Game of Thrones,” she said. “I had not watched it, I just started. I’m in the second season… and I’m fascinated by it.”
When pushed for who her favourite character was, Vergara replied, “My favourite one is the little girl that… is dressed as a boy. I think she’s very intelligent, very brave… I love that character.”
Though she never names her, she’s clearly referring to Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams. As she was only on season two at this point, we’ll let her off for not knowing everybody’s name.
While Vergara was still in the early stages of her Thrones journey, the rest of the world was halfway through the show. Season five had just begun when this interview was released. Key moments from this run of episodes include Tyrion joining Daenerys’ council, the battle between the Wildlings and the White Walkers at Hardholme, and the death of Jon Snow. As for Arya, Vergara’s favourite, she spends most of her time in Braavos, training with the Faceless Men in one of the show’s most boring and pointless side plots.
Little did Vergara know that the public’s love affair with Westeros would not last forever. Despite producing some of the greatest episodes of TV in modern history, the drop-off in affection for Thrones going into its final season would be catastrophic. People disagreed with pretty much every creative decision the showrunners took, leading to a rapid de-prestiging of the show, unlike anything seen before or since. Given how far behind she was, Vergara probably only just got to the final last week.
It’s unknown whether or not Vergara still holds Game of Thrones in the same high regard she did in 2015, but her appreciation for the show is a reflection of a simpler time. It was a time when you could turn on Thrones every week and know you were in for a masterpiece; a better time for everyone.
