Snail Mail shares new cover of the Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Tonight Tonight’
Snail Mail has shared a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins’ 1996 single, ‘Tonight Tonight’, which she recorded for A24’s I Saw The TV Glow.
The full soundtrack for the film was unveiled earlier this year and featured an array of indie favourites, including Florist, Yule, Caroline Polachek, King Woman, and Sloppy Jane, alongside Phoebe Bridgers. Snail Mail’s cover of ‘Tonight Tonight’ was not released as part of the soundtrack, though it did appear in the film.
Now, the cover is available to listen to on streaming services. In a gorgeous new take on the track, Snail Mail brings the epic alternative rocker into her realm of nostalgia-tinted indie rock. Beyond appearing on the soundtrack, Jordan also took her first steps into acting as Tara, one of the stars of the fictional TV show, ‘The Pink Opaque’.
On the process of making the song, and appearing in the A24 film, Jordan shared, “This all came together really serendipitously. We had been working on this cover to play on the ‘Valentine’ tour, before I got the part.” She explained that the song came up early on, noting that she has a tattoo partly inspired by the moon in the video for ‘Tonight Tonight’.
“While reading the script,” Jordan remembered, “I discovered the arch nemesis of the Pink Opaque is inspired by the same imagery. I told Jane we were doing this cover in NYC, they came and saw it live, and the rest was herstory.”
I Saw The TV Glow premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January before hitting cinemas in the United States in May. The film finally arrived in the United Kingdom and Ireland on July 26th.
Meanwhile, the Smashing Pumpkins unveiled their new studio record, Aghori Mhori Mei, August 2nd. Though the album was in the works for two years, it was only announced two weeks prior to release. No singles were shared in advance of the full album.
“We played this game of Rock and Roll for 36 years,” explained founder and frontman Billy Corgan, “And… had to give the knee many times to what is the first song and what is the first statement and let other people judge us by one moment in time. We felt the right way to hear this record was an intact body of work.”
Both Snail Mail’s cover of ‘Tonight Tonight’ and the Smashing Pumpkins new record, Aghori Mhori Mei, are out now.
