Sinéad O’Connor biopic in development
A biopic on the late Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor is reportedly in development.
A new report from Variety states that Irish production company IE: Entertainment, which produced the documentary Nothing Compares about O’Connor, is behind the upcoming movie, along with fellow Irish production house Nine Daughters and See-Saw Films, who are best known for Slow Horses.
Josephine Decker is set to direct the forthcoming biopic, which has reportedly been in the works since 2022. Irish writer Stacey Gregg has penned the screenplay. BBC Film is said to be funding the movie’s development.
According to Variety, the biopic will “explore O’Connor’s early life and beginnings in the music industry. It will look to tell the story of how one young woman from Dublin took on the world, examining how her global fame may have been built on her talent, but her name became synonymous with her efforts to draw attention to the crimes committed by the Catholic Church and the Irish state.”
O’Connor died at the age of 56 on July 26th, 2023, after being found unresponsive at her London home. Her funeral was held in Bray, Ireland, shortly afterwards. Following an autopsy, it was later ruled she died from natural causes.
After her death, O’Connor’s family released a heartfelt statement thanking the singer’s fans for expressing their “outpouring of love”.
“The children of Sinéad, together with Sinéad’s extended family, wish to thank the countless kind people who sympathised and offered condolences on Sinéad’s recent passing,” the message read.
In celebration of O’Connor’s life, a tribute concert was held for her, as well as The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan, last year at Carnegie Hall in New York. Performers included Dropkick Murphys, Cat Power, David Gray and Amanda Palmer.
There are currently no actors attached to play O’Connor in the forthcoming biopic.
