Simon House, Hawkwind and David Bowie musician, dead at 76

Simon House, best known for being the keyboardist and violinist with Hawkwind and David Bowie, has died at the age of 76.

His death has been confirmed by his daughter, Holly, and Hawkwind fanzine editor Brian Tawn. The latter wrote on Facebook: “I’m sorry to be saying that one of the finest musicians I have ever known has passed away. My condolences to Holly, Thor and all family and friends.”

Tawn continued: “Whenever he worked with Hawkwind, David Bowie or anyone else, he lifted the quality of their music and his solo albums are a joy to listen too. He’ll be greatly missed by many.”

No cause of death has been revealed.

House, born in Nottingham, began his musical journey when he moved to London during the 1960s. While in the capital, he played in several bands, including High Tide. He made two albums with the outfit before they parted ways.

He later joined Hawkwind in 1973, initially as a part of their live band before becoming a fully-fledged member and contributing to the recording process. Over a five-year period, House’s role in the group continued to grow in prominence with each release. However, the opportunity to join David Bowie’s band in 1978 was too alluring to turn down.

House played as a violinist on Bowie’s Isolar II world tour and featured on his album, Lodger, which turned 46 on May 25th. He later returned to Hawkwind in 1989 for a two-year spell and would also have two further stints in the group during the 2000s.

Cleopatra Records has led tributes, writing on social media: “It’s with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our dear friend and brilliant collaborator. Simon wasn’t just a musician—he was a sonic architect who helped shape the sound of a generation. He shared the stage with legends: David Bowie, Lemmy-era Hawkwind, and Nik Turner, always leaving his unmistakable mark.”

The label also noted: “His vision brought depth, texture, and soul — he simply made everything better. We miss you deeply, Simon. Rest easy, my friend. Your sound lives on.”
