This past week, American songwriting powerhouses Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen exchanged a number of cheeky social media posts teasing something. It sounded super casual as if the two artists were just hanging out on a public forum, but we all should have known better.
Well, today we do because today sees the release of ‘Like I Used To’, a collaborative song between two of the best musicians of the modern day.
Burning with intensity, the song is all hooks and catchy melodies. Before this moment, I never actually realised how closely Olsen and Etten’s voices sound alike, blending in beautifully moving harmony throughout the song’s wistful yearning for the past. Whether it’s coincidence or not, ‘Like I Used To’ perfectly illustrates how we’re all picking up the pieces of our past lives after being shut-in for nearly a year and a half. Even if it didn’t have major contemporary resonance, it’s still a great tune from two individuals who know a thing or two about great tunes.
Olsen has been personally emptying my wallet as of late with the release of the new box set Song of the Lark and Other Far Memories, which contains previously released albums All Mirrors and Whole New Mess plus B-sides and rarities. Why buy an entire box set when you can just listen to the whole thing on Spotify, you might be asking. Because the Spotify version doesn’t come with a 40-page booklet, and I’m a very visual learner.
As for Van Etten, a tenth-anniversary tribute cover album of her second studio effort, Epic, was released earlier this year, featuring artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams, Courtney Barnett, and Fiona Apple. That is another very good release, but I’m ready for some new music, and I’m damn near begging these two to put out a full-length album.
