‘Severance’ renewed for a third season

On the heels of an explosive second-season finale, Severance has been renewed by Apple TV+ for a third season, meaning that fans won’t be left wondering about Mark and Helly’s fate indefinitely.

The streamer announced that it would be backing another season mere hours after last night’s season two finale, confirming previous comments by executive producer Ben Stiller that fans likely would not have to wait so long for the next go-round after the three-year gap between seasons one and two.

In a statement, series creator, writer, and executive producer Dan Erickson said, “The idea of getting to make more Severance with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined. I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people.”

The show centres on Mark (Adam Scott), an office worker at the mysterious Lumon Industries who has undergone an operation called ‘severance’ that separates a person’s work memories from their personal, outside-of-work memories. This creates two distinct personalities that, initially, know nothing about each other. As season one progresses, however, Mark and his colleagues become increasingly suspicious of their employer and attempt to connect the dots between their inner and outer selves.

The season two finale resolved a personal conflict that Mark was facing and answered some of the major questions hanging over the series. However, it still managed to end on a cliffhanger, leaving plenty of loose ends to pick up for a third season.

Severance has been a bright spot for Apple TV+, which has historically struggled to match the output and subscriber numbers of rivals like Netflix and Amazon Prime. The company said that the series is its most-watched show globally. The first six episodes of season two garnered 3.68 billion viewing minutes in the US alone, according to Nielsen, which puts it second only to season three of Ted Lasso in Apple’s stable of shows.
