Self Esteem celebrates Valentine’s Day with new single ’69’
As Self Esteem continues to tease her third album, A Complicated Woman, she has shared her new single, ’69’, to coincide with Valentine’s Day.
The house single sees Rebecca Lucy Taylor sing about sex positions and voice her opinions on which ones are her favourites, before sharing, “But the one thing I hatе, ‘Cause I can’t concentrate, No, I just can’t abidе, Yeah, I’ve never the time to 69.”
In a statement, Taylor said of the release, “I always wanted to write a song that lists sex positions and rates them. A lot of my music is saying the things I struggle to say in real life. I like the idea of clearly communicating your needs in one quick, three-minute house song.”
There is also a deeper meaning attached to the track rather than merely seeing her rank sexual positions over a luscious house beat, as she explains, “It is also political – women still are expected to cater to others sexually; I can’t hear another discussion about ‘faking it’, it upsets me too much! There’s enough inequality in the male/ female dynamic as it is. Our bodies go through so much more pain and suffering, please god let us get the pleasure where we can!”
Additionally, ’69’ features drag icon Meatball. Taylor says of the collaboration: “I’d already written the song and then months later my all-time favourite drag queen Meatball said pretty much the same on her podcast Sloppy Seconds, and I knew it had to make the album!”
A Complicated Woman is slated to arrive on April 25th, 2025, but before then, Taylor will perform the album as part of a unique and theatrical presentation on April 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th at the Duke of York’s.
The new stage show is a collaboration between Taylor and Tom Scutt, who acts as the designer and director. It promises to be “an ambitious quasi-theatrical experience that harnesses the power and energy of a gig but presents it through a theatrical format”. Tickets go on sale for those who have pre-ordered her album on February 3rd, and general sale is set for February 5th.
’69’ is the second track to arrive from the album following the release of lead single ‘Focus Is Power’ last month.
