Scarlett Johansson criticises Oscars for overlooking ‘Avengers’: “How did this film not get nominated?”

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has called out the Oscars for snubbing Avengers: Endgame in a new interview.

Johansson’s interview was in promotion of her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, which will premiere at Cannes, but she also had a lot to say about her previous Avengers work.

“How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?” Johansson asked about Marvel’s 2019 offering while speaking to Vanity Fair. “It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, that really works as a film — and also, it’s one of the most successful films of all time.”

Johansson’s character, Black Widow, was killed in the movie. It marked a notable death, considering she had played the superhero since 2010’s Iron Man 2.

She expanded on her time in the series, stating: “It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play,” Johansson said. “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans, too — it’s important for them.”

The latest addition to the Avengers universe, Thunderbolts*, is proving a great success for Marvel. Thunderbolts* recently remained on top in its second weekend at the box office, earning $35 million and facing no new competition. This gives the film a domestic total of $131m. These numbers put the movie on course to pass the $200m domestic box office run of 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World.

Johansson has a busy schedule in 2025, including hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live on May 17th. This will be the seventh time the two-time Oscar nominee will headline the show. She will next star in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, which will play in competition in Cannes, and Jurrasic World: Rebirth.
