‘Thunderbolts*’ tops box office for second weekend with $35 million
The new Marvel movie Thunderbolts* remained on top in its second weekend at the box office, earning $35 million and facing no new competition.
This is a 52% drop from its $74m opening and would give the film a domestic total of $131m. These numbers put the movie on course to pass the $200m domestic box office run of 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World.
Next week’s big release may bring competition into the fold, as the gory New Line horror revival Final Destination: Bloodlines comes to cinemas.
Elsewhere, Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners has now surpassed $200m in domestic grosses, becoming the first original film since Disney/Pixar’s Coco in 2017 to pass that mark.
The positive reception sees almost a year of build-up to the movie pay off. Not only this, but the movie has changed its name to The New Avengers after its release in cinemas, prompting speculation about what could come next in the superhero franchise.
The success even impacts the big Disney bosses. Disney CEO Bob Iger has looked back at the post-pandemic Marvel roster with a fresh set of eyes, acknowledging the inconsistency of their success and promising Thunderbolts* heralds the turn of a new leaf.
Iger said: “Frankly, we’ve all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much. By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality. I think the first and best example is Thunderbolts*. I feel very good about that.”
Iger continued with the statement that he has “a lot of confidence in our upcoming slate,” referring to upcoming offerings such as Lilo & Stitch, Fantastic Four: The First Steps and Avatar: Fire and Ash, which will close out 2025. Then in 2026, they throw The Mandalorian and Grogu, Avengers: Doomsday and Toy Story 5 into the ring.
The film is out in cinemas now worldwide.
