Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals she wanted to return for ‘Scream 7’, but “nobody wanted her”
Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed that she has tried to reprise her role in the Scream franchise and is still “waiting for her call.”
It was recently announced that Gellar will be starring in a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This isn’t the only role the actor is desperate to reprise. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Gellar has confirmed that she hopes to return to the gory Scream franchise.
She played Cici Cooper in the second instalment of the horror series. Cooper faces a gruelling death at the hands of Ghostface, as she is thrown from the terrace of a sorority house.
No matter how much the actor wills it, we aren’t yet set to see her character return to life. “I’m not in [Scream 7]. I tried to get in [Scream 7], [but] nobody wanted me,” she revealed.
She continued, “They were bringing everybody back. I kept thinking I would get a call, I didn’t get a call. There’s a lot of people that died in all the Scream movies that are back. Skeet [Ulrich], [Matthew] Lillard. I’m just saying, I’m waiting for my call.”
Despite Gellar’s fervent wish to return, the latest addition to the franchise has been clouded in controversy. In March 2023, Jenna Ortega’s departure from Scream 7 was publicised. Only days before, the franchise lost another lead role as Melissa Barrera was fired. In November 2023, as the Israel and Palestine war ramped up, Barrera shared social media posts publicly supporting Palestine and condemning the actions of the Israeli government. This is largely believed to have led directly to Barrera’s exit, as well as Ortega’s, in a move of solidarity.
Though the two leads left the project, other huge names are set to return. Courtney Cox and Neve Campbell will hunt Ghostface once again. Also, David Arquette’s Dewey will return despite being killed in the 2022 movie.
Scream 7 is set for release in February 2026.
