Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms Chloe Zhao’s ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ reboot

Sarah Michelle Gellar, the star of the hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has confirmed that she will be involved in bringing a reboot of the show to life. Her statement comes after it was stated Chloe Zhao will be directing the project.

The original series ran between 1997 and 2003, with Joss Whedon acting as showrunner. Gellar played the main character, a young woman who must fight off vampires and save her town from evil spirits which led to her winning various awards for her performance.

A few days ago, Deadline reported that a reboot with screenwriters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and Nomadland director Zhao will be going ahead, with Hulu ordering the pilot for their platform.

Now, however, Gellar has posted on Instagram with details about her own involvement in the show. “So… you might have heard some news this week, but I realise you haven’t heard from me,” she wrote.

“Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential Buffy revival,” she explained, adding that “I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again.”

She eventually decided to meet Zhao, keeping an open mind about rebooting the project with the Oscar-winning director at the helm. “Our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure,” Gellar added.

Gellar continued: “While I didn’t agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation. These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea.”

The actor has promised fans that the new series will be worth their time, writing, “This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

At this stage, little is known about who will star in the project and when it will begin shooting.
