Chloe Zhao to direct ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ reboot with Sarah Michelle Geller

Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao is set to direct a reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer featuring Sarah Michelle Geller, according to a new report.

Geller originally starred in the hit series during its initial run which lasted between 1997 and 2003. In total, Buffy The Vampire Slayer had seven seasons, and in 2018, talk of a reboot began but nothing got off the ground. In 2022, executive producer Gail Berman confirmed that the project had been put on pause indefinitely.

However, Deadline has now claimed that Hulu is in the process of ordering a pilot, which could lead to a new series. In addition to Zhao and Gellar’s involvement, the pilot is set to be written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.

Geller, who is reported to be in the final stages of her contractual agreement, will reprise her lead role of Buffy Summers if all goes to plan.

Significantly, Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, is stated to have no involvement in the forthcoming project.

The latest development comes after Dolly Parton, a producer on the series, told Business Insider in 2024 of a potential reboot: “They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it”.

Intriguingly, Geller also seemingly gave the green light to return to the role in late 2024, saying on The Drew Barrymore Show, “It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect. But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realising there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Additionally, Geller expressed that she doesn’t believe it needs to be a prequel, stating, “No, it could be anything. It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

Currently, there is no timeline for when a potential Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot on Hulu will reach screens.
