Sandra Bullock warns film industry “we have to make AI our friend”

Sandra Bullock has encouraged the industry to lean into AI, though she added that we must be “incredibly cautious” with the technology.

The Gravity actor appeared at the CNBC Changemakers Summit, where she was asked to give her opinion on the usage of AI in Hollywood.

More specifically, moderator Julia Boorstin noted that a plethora of AI-generated fan trailers for Bullock’s upcoming movie, Practical Magic 2, have been widely circulating.

When asked if she found it “weird” to see her likeness manipulated by AI, Bullock shared, “Well, there could be worse [things] with my image!”

The 61-year-old added, “But it’s here. We have to observe it. We have to understand it. We have to lean into it. We have to use it in a really constructive and creative way, make it our friend rather than — I mean, we have to be incredibly cautious and aware of it because there are people who will use it for evil and not good.”

However, The Proposal actor remains more hopeful than most, adding, “I do feel that there’s a place for it… It’s here. We have to just be friends in some dark way.”

The debate over the inclusion of Artificial Intelligence in the creative industries shows no sign of slowing down.

While former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne recently criticised AI for “sucking up all human knowledge,” The Morning Show actor Reese Witherspoon encouraged AI usage as “the AI revolution has begun”.

“The AI revolution has begun, and I need to learn as much as I possibly can about AI and share it with all of you,” Witherspoon shared with her followers.

She added, “Also, FYI: the jobs women hold are 3x more likely to be automated by AI, yet women are using AI at a rate 25% lower than men on average. We don’t want to be left behind. So…do you want to learn with me?”
