Samsung respond to Dua Lipa’s $15million lawsuit: “We deny any allegations of intentional misuse”
Electronical giant Samsung have hit back after Dua Lipa sued the company for $15million over the alleged use of her image without permission.
The lawsuit relates to the use of her face on television boxes, which Lipa alleges was carried out without her permission or any payment.
The legal filing, filed on May 8th, reads, “Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever.”
It also insists, “Ms. Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.”
Now, Samsung have responded, claiming that they had permission to use her image on the television boxes.
Their statement reads, “Ms Lipa’s image was used in 2025 to reflect the content of our third-party partners that are available on Samsung TVs and was originally provided by a content partner for our free streaming service Samsung TV Plus.”
The electronics company insisted, “The image was used only after receiving explicit assurance from the content partner that permission had been secured, including for the retail boxes. Given this assurance, we deny any allegations of intentional misuse.”
Samsung added that it has “great respect for Ms Lipa and the intellectual property of all artists”, before claiming, “We have actively sought and remain open to a constructive resolution with Ms Lipa’s team.”
The picture that the lawsuit relates to is allegedly owned by Dua Lipa, according to her lawsuit, and was taken during her performance at the Austin City Limits festival in 2024. It began being used by Samsung in 2025.
Lipa’s lawyers alleged that the singer’s team contacted Samsung after learning of the advertisement, but accused them of acting in a “dismissive and callous” manner and refusing the request.
They also included a series of social media posts in the lawsuit from fans, who had claimed to have been lured into purchasing Samsung’s products due to the image of Dua Lipa on marketing material.
The ‘Houdini’ hitmaker is seeking “no less than $15m” in actual damages from Samsung, as well as punitive damages and legal costs.
